What being "holy" means?

I was taken aback when I mentioned about my Incovar friends to my not-so-holy friends (I meant dont-go-temple/church people). I was telling her about this hip hip dance class to be held, and how there's this boy (ahem referring to Alex) who can dance so sexy-yau yeng type (ahem *cough cough). Then you know what my friend commented??!

"Buddhist society friend? I thought they're suppose to be 'holy', just a masquerade..."

I was like, do you 'know' what it means by being "holy"? Where and how on earth people had the impression Buddhisty society members dont dance?! Its like, sometimes I wish people can be more open-minded, so to speak.

Remember when I was nicknamed "the holy one" by my ex-colleagues who are all non-religious, just because I started preaching about citizen's responsibility to vote, or not smoking. What do people at large really mean by 'holy'? Since when did I give the impression to people that I'm holy?

Anyway, if more general public were to discover more about Buddhist values, hmm... not a bad idea. More people to share my views with. Most of my friends are just clueless about the world and life, not like how I'd have the world of crap to yak about with them.

Blah - your say.

holy = full of holes??

hehhee... but while it's ok to dance, it is also important to understand the other person's viewpoint. people who are non-buddhists but have heard of buddhist teachings (e.g. not taking alcohol) will lament at the hypocrisy of buddhists who drink wine during wedding dinners.

it is thus important to not ignore this group of people who just want to further understand buddhism. we should take the initiative to point out that as a progressive lifestyle, buddhism is the key toward balancing one's life with leisure and work, fun and seriousness.

I dance jazz groove, get addicted/(constant high) to music and its works, enjoy jamming, even making it one of my main priority in my life.I'm a diehardfan of music.Does tat make me any less holier?

But it could be a double edge sword.ANYTHING IS.i.e.Medicine.Is it good or hazardous? It depends on how u use it.Music?Sex?Money?Even charity, you may LOOK charitable/holy..are you really?

Trouble is the public views of Buddhist society are taken from TV...you know, monks all shaved and wearing those robs knocking on some 'muk yu' and meditating...

Holy is such a relative word. What is considered holy to somebody might be considered disgusting by others (say, eating beef might be disgusting to Buddhist and Hindus but totally ok [even slaughtered publicly] for Muslims...or when Buddhist and Hindus go for em pork stuffs and Muslims give you that 'dirty' look...)

Just my 2 cents...

Holy makes me have these vague images of 'Holly' Valance in her Kiss Kiss MTV

Hello Joo, welcome to INCOVAR!

Yes, in today's world, information travels fast. Mass media is the #1 information source, hence many misconceptions arise from non-understanding of Buddhist teachings.

In the end, what is "holy"? How to define? Always pray, chant, go temple and burn joss sticks but dunno what is meditation? Or can enjoy life in moderation but practice 10 precepts?

*on ponder mode*
